Kate Cargile

I am a middle school art teacher who is highly interested in literature, history and visual culture studies.  These aspects of my life shape and inspire my artwork. I work in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, appliqué quilting, and paper mache sculpture.  My subject matter ranges from the beauty of the people, objects and places that make up my everyday life to fanciful ideas from myths, legends, tales and my own wild imagination.

My piece is a painting of bees on flowers to represent The
Hive on the sidewalk outside of Forage and the Hive. It was originally brightly colored--fun and eye catching. Its created in acrylic paint, and it seems no matter how many times I repaint it and clear coat it fades. I will plan to redo it again next spring,
perhaps looking into using an enamel or other longer-lasting paint. Its been a learning process--public outdoor art has a lot of weather and wear considerations to contend with.

I think public art is extremely important. It helps show
a community's identity and individuality. Its a way for people to get involved and make connections.

I'd love to see it everywhere--that we become a destination
for public art! I wish there were more ways to do sculpture or installation art around town without it costing a fortune or making things that are extremely temporary.
