Courtney Schlachter
Courtney Schlachter spent her New England childhood daydreaming, playing in the woods, reading, drawing, and wishing she could fly and/or be a fairy. As a used bookseller in her early 20s, she began collecting and repurposing castoff books, magazines, and maps; this was the birth of her signature mixed media style of art and design. Since 2005, Courtney has been creating art, bookmarks, stationery, gift tags, tree ornaments, paper flowers, and fairy crowns and other hair accessories, and now owns and operates Quiet City Books, Art, Gifts and Heart on downtown Lisbon Street. She lives in Lewiston with her husband and their children.
Public art is of the utmost important to communities like ours; it sparks conversations and makes connections and inspires. With my mural I hope to remind people of the magic and wonder of childhood, and getting lost in stories at any age. Quiet City Books is a venue for Art Walk, Sparkle Sunday, the Festival of Art and Lights, Small Business Saturday, For the Love of Art, and music and storytelling events to include and inspire as many people as possible through art, community, songs, and stories.

In the future I hope to see public art more widespread in Lewiston and Auburn, as something that draws people in as participants- as artists themselves or spectators- and as something that defines our community to residents and visitors alike.
